The Greatest Opportunity of Our Lifetime… Don’t Miss It!

The internet is the greatest opportunity of our lifetimes. By Far.

You can sell anything to anybody anywhere. Think about that for a minute. You can sell a pair of blue jeans that you bedazzled to a 17 year old girl in China. People do every day. Is it me or is that just insane!

There are kids making fortunes right now. I just read the story of a 17 year old girl who made $2 Million dollars while in high school by making myspace layouts for other teens and selling them for like twenty bucks.

Have you ever had an idea and you just brushed it off and then one day you saw people taking action on your idea and making a killing at it? Yeah, me too. I could tell you 10 stories like that – but I will save that for another post :)

The point is… that starting a business on the internet is just like that… but times 10. You will be kicking yourself ten years from now if you didn’t at least try.

The Internet Gold Rush is Now

Trust me, it won’t ever be easier than it is right now to start up a business online. We are still in the Wild West phase of the internet where people are going after gold like crazy and getting it.

Have you ever seen the show Gold Rush? The premise of the show is pretty compelling. You have 8 guys from a small town in Oregon who are all down on their luck because of the economy. They get together and decide to go up to Alaska and mine for gold. The first season is a bust – they just barely get 20 ounces of gold which doesn’t cover their costs. The second season they get 100 ounces which makes each of them about $10k. The third season they get 800 ounces which makes each of them about $80k.

Now $80k isn’t bad money by any stretch of the imagination. That is more than most people in the world will ever make. But these dudes have worked HARD for that money. They have taken big risks. They have been away from their family for 6+ months a year for the last three years. And they are starting to realize that they can make a good living doing it but its not likely that they will strike it rich. It is luck like so many other things.

One of the reasons it takes luck to strike it rich is because the thing that they are constantly looking for is “virgin ground”… An area of land that has not been mined on before. If they have that virgin ground then it increases their chances of making it by 1000%. But virgin ground is very hard to come by in Alaska because people have been mining up there for over 100 years. So they are forced to go further and further north to find that virgin ground (now they are going to South America)… and it is increasingly more dangerous and tough conditions.

Well… that same gold rush is happening online. But there is plenty of virgin ground. Thats because we are still in the beginning stages of the internet. People are still figuring out cool ways to use it. And there are tons of little small niches that people can mine and pull out gold.

Now I’m not going to BS you and tell you that you can be the next Facebook. Probably not. But what you can be is the next Gary Vaynerchuk. Who is he you ask? He is the internet wine guy. He decided to create a video blog a few years ago about wine. He owned a wine store and decided to blog about wine every day. So all he did was review a new wine each day and tell the truth. And a crazy thing happened. He started building a following. Now he does multi-million dollars a year in wine sales from the internet alone.

There are tons and tons of stories about regular people hitting it big on the internet with some crazy idea. There is a guy who does a million dollars a year pooper scooping online. Another one is a kid who makes millions selling his grandma’s jam. A guy makes 2 million a year selling plastic wishbones. Another housewife makes over a million a year selling microwavable pillows… Microwavable pillows, really?

But that isn’t the best thing. For every dude selling plastic wishbones and making millions, there are hundreds that have other little businesses that quietly make them $50k – $100k a year. I know a lady that makes 6 figures a year teaching about dressage (horse dancing). Now you don’t get much more obscure than that!

I guess the bottom line is that there is an opportunity for anybody to make their living on the internet if they want to…

Benefits of Owning A Website Business

There are lots of benefits of making your living off of the website you own… First off, you can start up on a shoestring. Many (almost all) of these businesses were started for under $1000. As a matter of fact most of them were started for under $200. You can build yourself a blog for less than $100. I will show you how in a post soon. What is amazing about this is the fact that you can literally start a business that has the potential to make you millions for less than a couple hundred bucks. That is crazy. Now it will take work dont get me wrong… but its possible to do this – thousands of people have.

Another advantage of having a business like this is that you can live where ever you want to… We decided that we wanted to live in California. My wife and I had visited Laguna Beach several times and really liked it. So… guess what. We sold all our stuff and moved there! You can do that if you aren’t tied to a job!

Speaking of job… You dont have a boss with your internet business – except you might end up being tougher on your self than a boss ever was… but it is a good tough because you are building something that will take care of you and your family and possibly even hand down to your kids. The other nice thing is you can work in your pajamas if you want to… Or you can work in shorts everyday – like I do… When we moved to Cali I got rid of all my suits and even all my pants. It is 70 degrees year round so I figured why do I need pants?

Lifestyle… Ultimately that is what it is all about. I went to a good college. I have experience in the securities industry. I could have a job on Wall Street and make big money… I am sure of it. I get calls from guys I used to work with periodically offering to come back. But that money comes at a hard price. You give up your life. Trade it in. When I was a stockbroker I was there from 7 in the morning until 8 at night most nights. I was stressed out all the time because I was scared my clients were gonna lose money or that I wouldn’t meet my quota. And I never saw my family. That sucks. I don’t want to live like that. And I dont have to – because my internet business gives me the freedom to do what I want. I get to spend time with my kids. Take them to school and to their stuff.

And while we were in California I was able to work on my boat. I set up my office on an old 1965 Egg Harbor Powerboat that I bought to restore. I had internet access and set up my computers on there and that is all I needed. So everyday I would go to the boat in Newport Harbor (it was actually right down from John Wayne’s old boat) and I would work on my business for a few hours then I would work on restoring the boat for a few hours. And have a beer occasionally too :) As you can imagine, I didn’t really mind going to work everyday!

All my buddies in our neighborhood got up every morning and pulled out on their way to some stuffy boring office building and either a small box of an office or a cubicle where they had to spend their life. And they all wanted to have what I had… And they could have if they wanted it – its out there for everybody.

I have never had a better office.

Just to be clear here, I am not saying all this to brag. And I am not extraordinary in any way. I am a regular guy like you. The reason I am writing and telling you about my story is to let you know that…

You Can Have the Same Freedom Too…

That is the great thing about this. There is no “old boys club” to keep you out. There is no 8 year degree you have to get. All you have to have is a little bit of smarts and a lot of hustle. And you can have it. All the freedom you want. Time freedom and money freedom. That is the goal.

The key to it is that you will be able to make a living on your own terms. Not kissing up to some boss. Not spending time building somebody else’s freedom.

You can make something awesome. Something that you are proud of. Something that will take care of your family for a long time to come. But it will take hard work at first. There is a great quote about entrepreneurs…

“Being an entrepreneur means living for a couple of years like most people won’t… So that you can live the rest of your life like most people can’t.”

I can tell you first hand that quote is true.

So, why have I written all this? I hope that I have convinced you to take the plunge and start your own internet business. I want to help 100 people get their internet business off the ground by the end of 2013. I am going to be posting tons of stuff online to help. I will give you links to services that I use and tutorials on how I use them. And all the tips and tricks that I wish I would have known when I started out.

The easiest thing to start is a blog. If you want to get a blog then all you have to do is buy a domain and hosting – I use Bluehost for most of my sites because it is really simple to set up and it is less than $5 a month and they give you the domain name for free! If you want to use them too, here is a link straight to their blog page: BlueHost Blog Setup

If you do set up your blog with blue host, send me an email (kevin@selffundedlife.com)  and I will send you a checklist that walks you through setting everything up correctly all the way up to your first blog post.

If you have any questions about how to do all this or how to get started, shoot me an email or leave a comment below with your email and I will help walk you through it. I know it can seem complicated at first – but it isnt that bad really. As a matter of fact, my 6 year old son has a blog that he started about the video games he likes to play… So I am sure you will pick it up quick.

The last thing I will leave you with is this… The time is going to pass either way. In 2 years you can be exactly where you are now or you can be free. I hope you come join me.

Hey Tony,
I am going to go into much more detail in the next few weeks… but the short answer is that you blog to create content that people resonate with and then you monetize your blog in a number of ways including advertising, your own products and affiliating yourself with useful products that can help your readers. Its actually much easier than it sounds – I will explain all of it in a post coming soon!

Thanks for your question!

Best,
Kevin
