What is a Gravatar and why do I need one?

So here’s the deal. Standing out in the internet is a good thing. Actually a MUST thing.  And not just to your followers but to people you are following as well.

One of the ways to stand out is with your Gravatar.

Grava – What?

Well you’ve surely seen or heard of the movie Avatar. It’s kind of like that except not necessarily everyone has to look like a Smurf. The first three letters of Gravatar – GRA stand for Globally Recognized Avatar. Clever, right?

A Gravatar is a small thumbnail image – hopefully something that reflects who you are or what your business is. You may have seen these box like images next to reviews made on yelp or comments on blog posts. Sometimes they feature a logo, a cartoon image or a photo of the person. The image inside that box is a Gravatar. It can be anything you want it to be, but it should be a representation of you as every time you leave a comment on someone’s blog, your Gravatar will be the face of the comment that defines you.

So why do I need this? Can’t I remain anonymous?

Well you could. But its not that smart in the long run. You have to stand out and stand above on the web. At least in your little sub niche of the world.

A Gravatar allows the reader to have a visual recognition of you to remember who you are. That is the main thing, for people to remember who you are. That’s why picking a perfect Gravatar that defines you and sticking with it is so important. Those empty boxes with just a silhouette of a person in them seem almost lifeless. Nobody will remember the empty boxes because the web is full of anonymous people. But a picture of yourself eating a triple scoop ice cream cone because your blog is titled The Ice Cream Cone Experiment will definitely click a nerve in someone’s memory bank.

….So let’s get down to business. How do I create my own Gravatar?

1. Go to http://en.gravatar. com/site/signup/

2. Type in your email address in the window and click signup

3. You will receive an automated message that will say that a confirmation email has been sent

4. Open you email and click on the active link that is provided.

5. Once the link opens enter in your username in the window given, also enter in a password (2x for accuracy)

6. You will be sent to another page once you click SIGNUP

7. Here you will be prompted to add an Avatar picture. Click on the highlighted - Add one by clicking here.

8. You can choose from any other the options listed including: image on computer hard drive, image on the web, image already uploaded, image from webcam.

9. For example purposes, I chose “Choose Image from Computer’s Hard Drive”

10. I uploaded an image from my computer’s hard drive.

10. Click NEXT once you have chosen the photo.

11. You will be sent to a screen where you have the option of cropping your photo for the perfect Gravatar.

12. You will be asked to choose a rating for your Avatar. G, PG, R or X depending on the content of your image.

13. And you are DONE!

Easier than getting into MIT!

Once you have your Gravatar you will want to start promoting your site and yourself within the blogging community – which we will cover down the road.

So… go forth and comment with your cool new avatar!
